If a budget doesn't call for a lavish gift for a husband, wife, boyfriend or girlfriend, there's no reason to feel down. Here are a few ideas for low-cost gifts.

Whether it's for Christmas, Valentine's Day, a birthday or just because, gift-giving can be expensive for that special someone. Check out some tips for keeping gifts special and unforgettable without breaking the bank.

Check the Web

Shopping online may not be as expensive as what others believe. "Save time and money by researching prices online. This also allows shoppers to avoid the crowds and save on gas," says Beverly Hill, Suite101 writer. Browsing the web may help someone come across two-for-one sales or special deals for shipping and handling.

Set a Budget

If couples have agreed to exchange gifts, they can set a price limit. In the end, this is a great way to be creative and they won't feel inadequate if one person bought a much more expensive gift than the other.

Frame a Couple Photo

All that is needed here is a picture frame and a photo of the couple. "If it has been a while since the couple had a photo taken together, choose one from earlier in the relationship at an event that brings back fond memories," suggests Genna Cockerham, Suite101 author. Check out sales at a local department store or dollar store – the shopper would probably be lucky enough to find frames for approximately one dollar each.

Make it Memorable

If season two of The Office comes to mind (when Jim bought Pam a teapot full of neat memories), think along the same lines. Find a cheap jar, mug, cup, basket or bag and fill it with items that remind the person of fond times. For instance, if there was a memory from when the couple went to a theme park, put a souvenir from there in the jar. Or maybe the couple travelled to the Dominican Republic and had chamomile tea at the resort. In that case, add a bag of chamomile tea to the jar.

Eat at Home

A home-cooked meal wins everybody's heart. Instead of spending money at a restaurant, invite someone over for a candle-lit dinner. Make his or her favourite dishes and bake sugar cookies for dessert.

Overall, there are countless ideas for saving money on a loved one. Remember to set a budget and shop around – many couples will come across amazing deals on the web. Also, be creative. Find a memorable photo, gather together memorabilia and have a romantic dinner for two at home. Really, it's the thought that counts the most.
